Best practices in teaching |
Demonstrate reflective practice through the integration of evidence-based knowledge, skills, and attitudes towards establishing effective learning environments
|
Some aspect of incorporating best practices in teaching in health care professions were discussed in every single course I have taken for this master's, so it felt like almost every project could apply in some way to this goal. The first artifact I chose is my final project for the Instructional Design course. This project takes the lines simulation lab that the third and fourth year medical students currently participate in that they generally struggle with, and creates a hybrid classroom approach where learners prepare for the simulation ahead of time, and then break into small groups to work through the skills and patient scenarios at the end of the week this lesson is assigned. Evidence-based practices in instructional design are emphasized throughout the document, including following the 12 principles of design in the storyboarding aspect of the assignment, incorporating a variety of interactive formative and summative assessments throughout the lesson plan, and highlighting real-time, experiential learning with simulation and real-life patient scenarios. The second artifact I chose is a presentation from a recent research project I am working on: investigating best instructional techniques when teaching novice learners basic suturing skills. This project aimed to determine the type of instructional techniques in which a student can not only effectively learn a skill, but also learn in an enjoyable, inclusive environment that emphasized self reflection and assessment. I recently presented this research at a national conference in Houston, Texas and inspired a lot of thoughtful discussion by the audience!
