Develop research skills and engage in scholarship activities in an effort to advance understanding and practice of education in the health professions

As a current research resident, I again have multiple possible examples of advancing research in the education setting. The first artifact I chose is an abstract from a project I will be presenting in San Diego next week and eventually (hopefully) publishing in the journal Global Surgical Education. The surgical residency program at UNMC recently underwent a massive change to the structure of our didactic curriculum, but we had not yet determined what the effect of these changes were on resident satisfaction with our educational activities. In order to further investigate this, I conducted a literature review on curriculum design in surgical residencies and utilized a research article for best practices in survey design to create a short survey for our residents regarding their perceptions of the curriculum before and after implementation of these changes. With the information we learned from this study, we can continue to make positive, real-time changes to our curriculum based on data-driven evidence from our residents. My second artifact is my final research proposal for the Research Analysis and Design course. Since finishing this course, I have gotten IRB approval and am in the early data collection phase for this project. The focus of this project is also on learner acquisition of skills, but this time for residents learning how to complete basic laparoscopic tasks such as intracorporeal suturing and how dominant and non-dominant hand use can change over time (surgeons really need to be ambidextrous to complete a procedure safely and efficiently). The knowledge I gained during the course has allowed me to hone skills in research design and implementation that I am currently applying to a number of educational projects to be presented and published over the course of the next year.
(As with goal 4, the data from artifact 1 is still unpublished, and will be submitted for peer review in an academic journal next month.)

Artifact 2: Final research proposal - Dominant and non dominant hand use in early surgical residents
