Assess the effectiveness and efficiency of instructional strategies and student learning achievements through evaluation of program and/or curricula outcomes
|
Assessment of the effectiveness of instructional strategies is also something that was emphasized in multiple courses throughout this master's program. My first artifact is from Instructional Design for Health care Professions in which we critically evaluated an e-module regarding its strengths and weaknesses in delivering its intended outcome. This artifact is a "Would You Rather" discussion about whether the e-module about endocrine pathology could be modified to better deliver its content or if it should be redone completely in order to fit the needs of the intended learner. This artifact identifies the intended learner, comments on whether it could better obtain the objectives, and proposes a plan for better implementation to achieve the objectives for the specific student population. Ultimately, I decided that for my learners, as early surgical residents, the content was not adequate for their understanding of endocrine pathologies based on the critical evaluation skills I learned in this course. My second artifact is my "psychometric analysis" assignment from Evaluation and Assessment of Learning (with the associated prompts available for download as a reference). I enrolled in this course later in the program due to scheduling availability, and as was discussed in the week's module that this was assigned, I have always been that student who didn't understand why test scores in standardized, online, multiple choice formats couldn't automatically be released to the student. Understanding the concepts of difficulty index, Q index, and general best-practices in test question writing gave me a much larger appreciation for what goes into exam writing in general, and why it takes time to review content to ensure it is meeting the intended objectives. Now, I can apply these concepts to attempt to write exam questions in the best format possible, as well as continually assess whether they are accurately reflecting the content I am trying to emphasize. By using these metrics on a regular basis, I will improve my assessment techniques for students learning.
