Educational Philosophy
As an educator, I believe that it is my responsibility to ensure that every learner who enters my classroom or clinical encounter should leave with a new skillset or higher level of knowledge than they entered with. In health care professions, learning almost always requires a combination of didactic experience accompanied with hands-on exposure. Learning requires repetitive practice of clinical skills and a combination of positive feedback and well- timed suggestions for improvement so that a learner feels safe and supported in the environment but also that an instructor is invested in their improvement as a clinician.

Student QUOTES
- "Dr. Tieken is an outstanding resident, and I am grateful I had the opportunity to work with her! She is a helpful and encouraging teacher, and I have been able to apply the knowledge and skills she taught me in my later rotations. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and I enjoyed being able to work with her for a month!"
- " She did an amazing job of helping us with our first rotation in the hospital. We would get lost sometimes and she was very considerate and would come find us. She also went out of her way to go over basic surgery cases with us and practiced them like she was a standardized patient. It was incredible helpful in learning those topics and helped a lot with the OSCE. She was also very patient with us. "
- " Enjoyed working with her. She made it a point to teach students and involve them in the OR and during morning rounds. She definitely taught me something new every single day. In fact, sometimes I wanted to follow her to all her surgeries because I knew those were the ones where I will likely get to suture and also learn something new from her. "
- "Did a great job teaching during OR cases/rounds. Took the time to talk over confusing concepts when able. Always involved students in the OR. "
- "Dr. Tieken was a great resident to work with! She truly went above and beyond to provide educational opportunities to med students. I gained so much knowledge and improved greatly on my suturing skills because of the time she spent with me and the other students. She was sure to explain concepts and skills throughout cases and was definitely one of the reasons that my time [on service] was so educational and enjoyable."
- "Dr. Tieken was the first resident that I worked with as a third year and she made the transition into the clinical setting easier. She challenged me to apply skills that we have learned, advanced my skills through teaching, was available to answer my questions and offer feedback. She let me choose topics to talk about, allowed me to struggle through concepts, then would provide education after to ensure information stuck. She made sure my surgery rotation was full of education and new experiences. She also tailored education to my interests."
